BASE CAMP - BRIDGE TO THE INDUSTRY - 5/8/19

My Commercial Industry Day Experience

Recently I had the opportunity to attend an industry day at Base Dance Studio in London. This day consisted of 4 commercial classes all 1.5hrs long taught by 4 different teachers. Liam Lunniss, Josh Wharmby, Lisa Spencer & Josh Pilmore. These teachers are well known for their choreography and abilities to dance and have had experience within the dance industry and still are working within the dance industry. Along with these 4 classes we also had a Q&A session at the end of the day with agency Simon & How associates, where we are able to ask questions about their agency and the industry.

Upon arrival at the studio we were welcomed and needed to sign in our names and make sure we had emailed our headshots and CV to the email address stated. I thought this was such a good idea as the agency were watching our final class so it gave us the opportunity to be spotted and having our CV and headshots already gave us that further opportunity to be noticed and made it feel like this was an audition day.

Each class was great, they were all commercial dance based however, all different styles. L.A. commercial, heels and hip hop/L.A. All the teachers gave advice such as what they look for in a dancer, how to perform the choreography and maintaining a positive attitude (all of which I plan to write about in my module 3 work). The Q&A with Simon & How associates was very useful and I have already typed up the questions asked and answers. This will contribute to my research for my inquiry topic as it gives me an insight and more knowledge on how some agencies work and how they can help me gain dance job opportunities.

From this industry day experience I found that I am able to carry out a variety of commercial styles, learn how to pick up choreography at a fast pace, experience the type of competition I am auditioning against, consider the types of jobs I would like to audition for and how I can promote myself.

If you have any information or knowledge on any agencies you want to share with me I am eager to know as this is a big factor for my inquiry topic and I would love to hear your opinions on them or if you've had any experience working with any, whether you feel they help find you job opportunities!?

What is my inquiry? What is my practice? How do they link? Why are these questions raised for me?
